Why Should We Care About the Environment?

  • Life - We are all living organisms dependent upon clean air, clean water and food (our environment) for life.

  • Natural Resources - Our planet's natural resources are finite. Eventually we will run short of the materials we now use and discard; it's important that we protect these resources through household recycling.  The less that we have to extract resources the longer resource areas can remain in a natural state.

  • Lake Champlain - Winooski obtains its drinking water from Lake Champlain. Pollution prevention efforts and proper management of stormwater, biosolids, and hazardous waste will help to keep Lake Champlain clean.

  • Reduced Rubbish Removal and Disposal Costs - Landfill development is expensive.  Transporting waste to distant landfills is also expensive.  In most cases, landfills are not welcomed, yet, they are a necessity. To slow development of landfills in the immediate area and region, recycling and waste reduction must become a way of life for everyone.

  • Money - Waste costs money!  Waste reduction and recycling efforts can save money over time.

  • Energy - Energy causes pollution.  Inefficient energy use wastes money.  Conservation helps to reduce costs and the pollution which results from energy generation.

  • The Future - Preserving resources and the environment for future generations is one of the most important tasks we face.  Through responsible environmental behavior today, we will to ensure that our children have adequate resources a high quality of life available to them in the future.
